As Arctic Monkey’s finally announce their long-awaited
return, I argue that ‘Suck It and See’ is their best piece of work to date.
1: Alex Turner is at his lyrical best and playing around
with words never came so easily to him than on this record. “Called up to
listen to the voice of reason, and got his answering machine” – Reckless
Serenade
2: Pop-culture references have never been so subtly entwined
within songs – “I feel like the Sundance Kid behind a synthesizer” – Black
Treacle
3: Imagine Tarantino’s western world being encapsulated by the
upside-down. It is Arctic Monkeys’ most distinct and unique sound across their
five records as they submerge the wild west sound into darkness.
4: It’s the perfect blend of moods. 'Brick By Brick' provides the all-out rock 'n' roll we already knew how love whilst the rest of the records anxiously meddles with dreamy euphoric pop
songs, ‘Suck It and See’, mystery, ‘Don’t Sit Down Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair’ and
plotted love songs, ‘Love is a Laserquest’.
5: ‘That’s Where You’re Wrong’ – A funky bassline with the
rolling drum beat to match, not to mention the delicate splashes of guitar
throughout the verses, what’s not to like? The chorus is euphoric and the main
riff arrives in timely fashion to unwind your shoulders and make you move.
