IS THE BRITS FINALLY EMBRACING DIVERSITY?

Yes, music awards are generally irrelevant. Music divides opinions like no other and so to award the most popular seems unfair, as popularity and talent are not always relational. However, despite the brilliant Jack Whitehall hosting this years awards, the major headline is that the BRITs may be beginning to embrace diversity.

Grime sensation Stormzy and hip-hop wonder kid Loyle Carner are both nominated for British Male Artist of the year, with Stormzy also up for Album of the Year and Carner up for British Breakthrough Act, a category which features no white male for what may be a BRITs’ first.

Meanwhile, in the search for gender equality, the BRITs are slowly getting there. The nominees for best British group features three bands lead by women, meanwhile Dua Lipa has become the most nominated act in BRITs history. However, the nominees for British Breakthrough and British Album raises question marks over this.

While the BRITs still remain irrelevant as an award ceremony, it remains an important commercial beacon watched by many. Whether the BRITs have truly embraced diversity we will find out once the winners have been revealed, but the first step is a positive one.
