THE BRITS DONE GOOD

So the BRIT Awards are over for another year but was it a night of celebration, or another shameful awards ceremony full of controversy and ignorance?

In terms of the winners, it was a step towards embracing diversity. Grime star Stormzy won Best British Male as well as British Album of the Year whilst punk rock pop star sensation Dua Lipa won British Breakthrough Act.

It's possibly the first award ceremony to take a step towards embracing diversity, whilst simultaneously giving the awards to the deserving winners. Granted, there were a couple of crowd-pleasing award winners, with Ed Sheeran's Global Success Award and Harry Styles' victory in the Best Video category, but it's hard to disagree with those two winners.

The BRITs appeared less censored this year too. Host Jack Whitehall made a few jabs at talent-show, 'The Voice', before attempting a North Korea gag, which was disliked by many on Twitter but showed how the BRITs doesn't have to be this formal occasion, rather it can be a stimulant for change and a night of fun.

On a more serious notes however, Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn used his time at the winners podium to discuss Brexit, reminding the viewers not to get too isolated, and not allow Britain to become too isolated. The #MeToo Time's Up campaign was in full flow too, with many of those presenting awards making reference to it, and reminding the viewers we are in a period of change. All presenters wore a white rose pin to show solidarity also. Meanwhile in a stunning finale, Stormzy launched into a rap asking Theresa May "where's the money for Grenfell" and asking if the government thought we forgot about Grenfell.

The night summed up the mood of the nation. All isn't well in Britain but the youth are beginning to take notice, stand up and fight. Change is on the horizon and when led by the likes of Dua Lipa, Stormzy, Wolf Alice and Loyle Carner, who's going to stop those striving to make a change?
