TRANQUILITY BASE HOTEL & CASINO, WHAT?

Arctic Monkeys are back. Next month will see the release of their 6th album, 'Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino'. We appreciate many of you will be wondering what they mean by 'Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino'.

As we saw with 'Suck It and See' and 'AM', the Monkeys are starting to tone it down in comparison to their first two records. Their records are beginning to match their LA lifestyle and seeing as 'Tranquility' literally means 'calmness', we expect this LP to be no different.

Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino clearly refers to AM's new Americana lifestyle. Now we're pretty sure this isn't a real place, somewhere Turner and Co. relax after a hard day in the studio. We're also sure it's not the birthplace of the album, or even the place the record was conceived. Our prediction is that this Hotel & Casino is a place in Alex Turner's head, a mind set, the state of mind the Monkeys had to reach in order to produce this record. An imaginary world where the four of them live and plot their next global takeover.

A large golden structure, hexagonal in form, 50+ floors high. Turner stays in the pent house, the rest take a room each on the floor below. The studio lies just below these rooms. In the basement is the casino. Blackjack tables are infinite and the sound of a spinning roulette wheel can be heard on the occasions the muffled conversations cease. A large chandelier hangs from the ceiling and dotted on the walls are various pieces of modern art as well as a neon sign displaying the world-famous 'AM' album cover.

As you walk through the main entrance into the lobby, reception is on your right and straight on is the bar which faces out onto the desert. There are several sofas outside and a few hammocks hang from some artificial palm trees. Wandering around this relaxation area is a flock of flamingos. It's a smart place they've got here, now we just need its soundtrack. We'll see you on May 11th when Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino opens its doors.

  1. I liked your conceptual take of Tranquility Base, I think that plays a lot into the writing of the song. I agree that the concept is a very interesting take on life in Americana, however, individually I was not a fan of the all the songs. I found the album was a sharp turn from AM and was very abstract with the lyrics and music. I think that your take on the 'imaginary world' concept is very present in the Album, and well reflects the new found LA lifestyle the band is living. Specifically Lead Alex Turner making his vocals forefront on the tracks, whereas traditional Arctic Monkey's relied on heavy guitar. To me it is an album you have to listen to more than once to fully understand but it is still worth a listen.
