INTERVIEW: NO HOT ASHES

You've just released your debut EP, what can you tell us about 'Skint Kids Disco EP', about the meaning behind it and the creation process?

“Skint Kids Disco EP” is our first real offering in terms of a grouping of songs to the world. The whole process was exciting. It began around February 2017 when we recorded “Bad Crowd” we immediately fell in love with the song but didn’t quite know what to do with it. Jump ahead 6 months and we’d signed a deal with exciting Liverpool/China label Modern Sky UK and we began plans for the EP. We recorded the remaining 2 tracks back end of 2017 and the whole process was really inspiring, and we had a lot more time in the studio than we usually do to experiment and really craft the songs with our producer, Gavin Monaghan (Editors, The Twang, JAWS).

Meaning wise, we wanted the whole EP to be as relatable as possible to our young fanbase and for it to be a body of songs each with their own identity.

You guys have established a big, loyal following in Manchester now, how does it feel to continue selling out these great venues?

We are very humbled and proud of our loyal fanbase in Manchester. The shows keep getting bigger and it blows us away every single time we perform in our hometown. We aim to keep getting bigger and bigger.

You've also ventured out across the country to play a few shows, what was the reaction like when you went away from home?

For the past 2 years now we have non-stop been touring, visiting as many cities/towns around the UK as we can to widen the fanbase and it’s been really exciting. Meeting new people and fans around the country who love your music is an amazing feeling. We’ve generally had a great reaction in every out of town show we have played so we’ve been lucky in that sense. We've played to crowds both big and small, but we always love returning to those cities and we notice the crowds getting that little bit bigger.

There's a busy summer ahead, where are you most excited to play?

We do! Obviously, we are excited for the whole of summer and can’t wait to get on the road. Collectively we’d probably say we are most excited for YNOT as we have always pulled an amazing crowd in the past when playing the festival and with it being so close to home it feels almost like a hometown show. We are also really looking forward to TRUCK Festival as we have never played a festival down south.

Your sound is clearly influenced by disco and funk, which artists would you say have influenced you the most?

CHIC, Nile Rodgers, The Doobie Brothers, Bootsy Collins… the good stuff.

This Feeling have given you a lot of support, how important are companies like This Feeling for bands like yourselves?

Great for getting new bands heard and also incredibly supportive in terms of PR and Radio play. The fact they have stages at some of the most influential festivals around the UK and attract so many big-name backers says it all.
