Don't let the exaggerated American accent fool you, Soccer Mommy is no cheesy wannabe, rather a timid, uncertain, raw superstar in waiting with an incredible work ethic and DIY ethos.
If glossed over quickly, Soccer Mommy's art may appear simple. However, after producing three albums in the last three years her craftsmanship has quickly developed. An abstract narrator of stories surrounding incompetence, insecurity and escape, Soccer Mommy presents her complex work nonchalantly.
This year's record, 'Clean', shows Soccer Mommy at her best and exemplifies the growth in confidence that has occurred over the last three years. Opening track, 'Still Clean', appears to incorporate part of the demo version to create an air of authenticity and feeling of vulnerability. Meanwhile lead single, 'Your Dog', sees her confidently state, 'I don't wanna be your fucking dog', a bold song protesting a toxic relationship. It's in 'Last Girl' where her artistic abilities reach their pinnacle however. An upbeat indie pop song that sonically, is full of positivity, yet lyrically it is infused with insecurity and anxiety. It is this recipe that has allowed Soccer Mommy to be so successful. Her songs appear joyous yet when listened to closely, the meaningful bedroom stories become apparent.
