ON TREND: THE OL' WILD WEST (COWBOYS ON THE COMEBACK)

Didn't you hear? The Wild West is making a big ol' return in 2018 and we couldn't be more excited. Last year on a cold North Eastern night at Newcastle's Cluny, before yet another sublime performance by Alex Cameron and his very own posse, I looked around and almost every group in the room contained at least one person embracing the Wild West in a suede tassel jacket. The ol' Wild West is making a grand comeback this year, and we couldn't be happy.

Alex Cameron himself became a cowboy not long ago in a comical music video as he featured on Kirin J Callinan's video, 'Big Enough', in which Callinan and Cameron dress up as cowboys and sing, 'this town might be big enough for the both of us'. Meanwhile many other artists are embracing country sounds.

The Western comeback received another push a few months back as Goat Girl unleashed their self-titled, debut album. The record uses various Western influences from creepy violins to the more familiar sounding riffs usually associated with a horse chase scene. It is dark country rock at its finest. And even Harry Styles is embracing the country vibes. His live shows feature a cover of Fleetwood Mac's 'The Chain' and new song, 'Anna', is clearly influenced by country pop.

2017 also saw some brilliant Western cinema and TV with 'Hostiles' and 'Godless' receiving a tonne of praise. Meanwhile the brilliant Westworld is currently baffling viewers everywhere with its quite frankly outrageous second season. Despite the show's plot being focused around sci-fi mishaps and advanced AI, the aesthetic of Westworld is dominated by the Wild West, with cowboys flying around on horses, engaging in shootouts with old school revolvers.

It ain't just music or TV though. The fashion of the Ol' Wild West is returning too. Almost all vintage clothing stores possess a western shirt isle whilst ASOS and Topman are now designing their own western shirts and suede tassel jackets to match.

Accept it, embrace it, enjoy it. 2018 is the year of the Wild West. Don't be a stranger and get in on the act. You know we've already made our moves.
