ON TREND: GIRL POWER

On Friday 29th June, an overwhelming amount of girl power smack us in the face in the most glorious ways possibly. 'Girl Power' is always in the air as women continue to do incredible things but we just wanted to take a moment to share the love for some of our favourites, and some of the magical things they're doing. So, here's what some fabulous women have been up to this past week.

Black Honey, lead by the formidable Izzy Phillips, announced their highly anticipated debut album, released at the end of September. Alongside this they dropped a new single, 'I Only Hurt The Ones I Love', a catchy pop tune with a whirring wild west riff and superb singalong chorus. Accompanying this was a fabulous music video which sees Izzy strut around an old Western theme park in cowboy clobber before turning into a groom-less bride in a Kill Bill-esque twist. The album is available for pre-order and we suggest you do just that. Here's the link: https://blackhoney.backstreetmerch.com/en-gb

More new music arrived on Friday in the form of new albums from Florence and the Machine and wickedly wonderful teens, Let's Eat Grandma. Both records are utterly fantastic and show the growth and development of both artists. There's a whole variety of styles used in each record, with something for everyone, like a buffet of delicious pop delicacies.

Then, on a glorious Sunday afternoon at Glasgow Green, Sigrid blew us away. On a day dominated by male guitar bands, Sigrid's mind blowing pop was a refreshing change. She poured every ounce of energy into the set, wearing a smile on her face throughout. It was euphoric to say the least. At just 21, the Norweigan star has already proved her quality and we can't wait to see her take on the world.

Finally, turning away from music, the second season of GLOW was released on Netflix. The show follows a group of women wrestlers in the 1980s through times both good and bad, troublesome and triumphant. The cast is full of fearless actors including Alison Brie, Betty Gilpin and even Britain's own Kate Nash. Season 2 is brilliant. Superb storytelling and in-depth character development, it's completely captivating whilst simultaneously integrating real life relatable issues within it. It's truly becoming one of the best TV shows around.

Of course, this isn't simply a 'trend', this is something that is always present. Women continue to do magical things particularly in film and music and it's important we remember that and keep supporting them! Go and buy Black Honey's new record, stream Florence & The Machine and Let's Eat Grandma's new LPs till your heart is content, buy tickets for Sigrid's upcoming tour and go and watch G.L.O.W, you won't regret doing any of them!
