FILM: BLACKKKLANSMAN (SOUNDTRACK)

The overall soundtrack is a clever piece of work, capturing the period perfectly, infusing icons and cultural kingpins into the film subtly, including a previously unreleased Prince song. However, the one piece that reappears continuously, aptly titled 'Main Theme', is without doubt one of the finest arrangements put in a film this year, it's simply incredible.

That slow, jazz-infused riff that slithers unexpectedly into vital scenes, increasing the intensity, offering a whole load of mystery. The rolling drums then slide in as smoothly as a comb through a slick quiff, a flake into a 99. The pummeling percussion precise in its placement, punishing and powerful. Twinkling orchestral arrangements dance a top of the already stunning piece, the riff now increasingly distorted, rummaging around for a new direction to flow in. It's simply flawless and as the musical cornerstone of this incredibly important socio-cultural film, it's just right.

The same piece manages to accompany multiple atmospheres whether it be a powerful-bordering-on-harrowing scene, an uplifting euphoric segment or a high intensity, mysterious moment, it fits perfectly. Yet even when the mood shifts within a scene, as it regularly does, the music remains relevant at all times, shape-shifting to match the changes. Bravo.
