ON TREND: AUTUMN ARRIVES

I LOVE AUTUMN. Summer is just too hot. Shorts are not cool and nobody can pull them off. You need a haircut every two days just to survive. Yeah festivals are great and all but it's just a lot more hassle than a gig down the local pub/bar isn't it? Autumn means leather jackets without being BBQ'd alive, jeans without chaffing, grey t-shirts without, well you figure it out... Autumn is that beautiful in between. The calm both after and before the storms of summer and winter. The perfect mid-point. The string that holds the year together. Like the needle in a record player, a good Autumn makes everything tick, and keeps everything sounding and looking sweet.

So this week's 'On Trend' is going to focus on the arrival of Autumn, specifically the beautiful month of September. A month that, at base level, signals the end of summer, the start of the Autumn, but in reality is so much more. September is a beautiful month for music and TV generally and here's why...

Last year, September brought us the three best albums of 2017 as Wolf Alice, The Killers and The National put out three stellar records respectively, and this year, next week to be precise, the same thing may happen again. The Blinders and Black Honey are releasing their debut albums next Friday and if the singles are anything to go by, both LPs are going to be among many people's AOTY lists come December. Meanwhile, several artists have already released some superb music this month.  Dua Lipa returned, putting out a new single, 'Electricity' with Silk City (Mark Ronson & Diplo) and Manchester pop-quartet, Pale Waves, dropped their debut album today (although the verdict is still out on this one.)

There's also some tasty TV coming in a couple of weeks as Jack Whitehall returns with Series 2 of 'Travels With My Father', which I personally cannot wait for, the perfect hangover cure some might say. Meanwhile 'A League Of Their Own' has also returned, and already proven why it's one of the most loved panel shows on TV just 3 episodes in. As well as this, the Mercury Prize awards take place this month, one of The Rodeo's favourite events of the year.

September also signals the end of summer festivals (boo!), but also means gig season starts up once again and in the UK, it is starting off with a bang as Arctic Monkeys return! I'll be attending and reviewing the final date in Newcastle in a couple of weeks time. Also touring this month are Editors, Tom Grennan, Pale Waves and many more. Exciting times!

This time of year also signals new fashion as outlets release their Autumn ranges. Jackets come back out of the wardrobe and new styles are created as people try and find a way to reinvent their image whilst remaining warm. Whilst it seems many outlets are focusing on denim for the time being, many craning their necks in an unashamedly-blatant nostalgia-ridden nod to the seventies (we can thank Mr. Turner for that), ASOS have gone jungle, encouraging you to stay loud and proud with a range straight from the Amazon Rainforest. With plenty of snakeskin trimmings on shirts and trousers and zebra patterns dominating , this range is perfect for animal-lovers and mavericks. However, if I'm being honest, it is all a bit much, and wouldn't recommend buying more than 3 items from the range. I mean how much animal print can one person fit into an outfit unless they're attending a David Attenborough themed evening? However, it's something different at least, right? I know, clutching at straws a bit here...

Anyway, put simply, Autumn is certainly 'On Trend' right now and I couldn't be happier. Keep an eye and ear out for all of these new goodies over the next couple of weeks. Buy yourself a big mug, boil the jug, drink tea without sweating your whole body weight, enjoy a zebra-print shirt, lavish in new music, laugh at ALOTO, go to a concert where the 9pm sunlight isn't shining through the windows, see who wins the Mercury Prize and smile, because it's the most wonderful time of the year.
