THE MAGIC OF MITSKI

Despite being on album no. 5, her new record, Be The Cowboy, shows Mitski at her most daring. And as a result, Emily Bedward has gone and put her under the spotlight...

Get your dancing shoes on because Mistski has gone disco with shoegazing guitar rhythms and
light-hearted synths, she's produced a collection of consoling tracks you can to dance to. Her highly anticipated fifth album, Be The Cowboy, is her best work to date and has deservedly received rave reviews across the critical platforms. From what could be described as a complex album, jumping across genres, with songs ranging from synth pop to disco all the way to country and emotionally compelling lyrics creating a captivating sound, she has the power to make everything seem so clear.

The solo songwriter's previous album ‘Puberty 2’ was tediously distorted in parts. Whilst this continues on Be The Cowboy, it seems to have been done on purpose, with songs such as 'Geyser' sounding gloriously all over the place, with a haze of organs and strings which gives a none abrasive but passionate approach, whilst her compelling and emotive voice is the forefront of the song, a trend that continues throughout the album.

Mitski continuously sings about being alone and “not wanting your pity” but “somebody near me”. This is most evidently demonstrated by the record's finale, the haunting, ‘Two Slow Dancers', in which Mitski sings about the childhood approach to romance, “it would be a hundred times easier, if we were young again”. She sings with a raw husky tone that can be compared to the likes of Angel Olsen, singing on top of a thick synth sound and occasional rush of strings that is inevitably repeated throughout the album. The whole album is truly admirable and hypnotising throughout. Through power chords and emotive lyrics, Mitski manages to paints a vivid picture of love and lust and everything in between.
