ALBUM OF THE YEAR #9: SOCCER MOMMY - CLEAN

Soccer Mommy opens up her personal diary with an album of heartfelt bedroom pop. Opening track, ‘Still Clean’, incorporates part of the demo, transporting you to Soccer Mommy’s bedroom where most of these tracks were penned, the record's production is subtle, but its clever. Clean is a superb exploration of Sophie Alison's troubles, she grows in confidence throughout this coming-of-age-epic, putting past heartbreaks and troublesome teenage years behind her, using this record as closure. The instrumental parts seem simplistic but Allison stretches the acoustic guitar as far as possible to create a range of sounds that fit together perfectly. ‘Your Dog’, Allison’s coming-of-age anthem, and ‘Last Girl’, a euphoric depiction of any remaining insecurities, provide the two knock-out blows any album needs with poignant pop choruses, whilst still remaining true to the trademark Soccer Mommy sound. It’s a record you need to let grown on you, but give it time and you’ll reap the rewards.
