CONNIE CONSTANCE, OUR ENGLISH ROSE

English Rose is a poignant commentary of contemporary Britain and current social life that sees a diverse array of influences come together to create a well-balanced, well-crafted album. The opening title-track lulls you in with its hazy piano balladry but the record ignites quickly, the neo-soul and hip-hop influences of the following few tracks warns you that this a feisty record. Connie’s voice is the centre-piece ultimately. The variation of her vocal allows her to experiment with numerous genres from soul to blues to hip hop, whilst the determination, grit and pain conveyed by her voice adds an extra dosing of passion to her purposeful and direct lyrics. She takes aim at our government on many occasions, both in ‘I Want Out’ and ‘Bloody British Me’, where she perfectly captures the mood of today’s youth. Connie is part of a reviving soul movement in Britain right-now and this debut LP puts her firmly at the centre of it.
