SIGRID'S SUCKER PUNCH IS A KNOCK-OUT

sucker punch
INFORMAL
noun
  1. 1.
    an unexpected punch or blow.
  1. 2. Sigrid's second album

Sigrid's debut LP, Sucker Punch, is exactly that, in two senses of the phrase. The blazing, confetti-popping singles that saw her raise to fame and take the gong for BBC Sound of 2018 pack a firm punch, the soaring production glistening at each turn. But Sucker Punch is much more than a collection of pop songs focused on an anthemic chorus, that repeat the same song structure over and over. The eclectic sounds and instrumentation found on this album, alongside Sigrid's ever-improving song-writing abilities will leave you floored in utter awe of the young Scandinavian.

We know she can write a stadium-anthem, but this LP shows she’s much more than that. Sucker Punch sees Sigrid continually turns narratives of the everyday into something magical. Youthful tales of feeling both fearless and inadequate are told with pure honesty, her positivie outlook constantly reassures you that everything is going to be ok. Meanwhile the use of strings, the guitar and the piano means this album is much more than an overproduced display of blazing neon synths and bombastic beats. Whilst album highlight, ‘Sight Of You’ sounds disgustingly positive, it wouldn’t be out of place on a Disney soundtrack, the string arrangements utterly euphoric.

That infectious smile she wears on stage, performing like a competition-winner, is felt throughout what is a superb pop album that lives up to and perhaps surpasses all of the hype held over Sigrid’s head since she burst onto the scene. Surely now, as she matures as a songwriter and grows as a person, her songs will only sound even more colossal.

Haiku Review
Scintillating stuff,
Anthemic and delightful,
A true pop triumph
